RECTOR'S NOTES
Returning to the Parish: Following a lengthy period of recovery and vacation, it is a joy to return to the responsibilities and daily patterns of parish life. As always, I am grateful to the parish staff and our guest clergy, Fr Kephart and Fr. Johnston, who kept the parish in good order during my absence. I am no less grateful to parish members who remain faithful in worship and service to the parish throughout the summer months.
Returning to the Kitchen: As a celebration of the near beginning of the fall parish program and as a celebration of our remarkable Farmers' Market, I would like to host a Farmers' Market meal on Saturday, August 28, at 6:00 p.m. As with the meals we have shared in the recent past, the goal is purely social, though the building up of relationships is certainly a spiritual benefit to the parish. Still, we will allow the food and fellowship to do its own secret and important work. Regarding the menu, I will allow the market and my imagination to determine the right direction. With a wagon in tow, I will make judicious selections, and then return to the parish to create a meal worthy of your enjoyment. I will, of course, need helpers, particularly for serving and cleaning. Please call the parish to offer your assistance. Also, I must have a general idea of the number of people coming. Please see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board or call the parish office. A free will offering is kindly requested to cover expenses. You may bring your own adult beverage provided moderation is observed.
A call for Sunday School Teachers and Helpers: Youth Director Michelle Condit is requesting help with our Sunday School program. As you know, we have reaffirmed our commitment to Youth Ministry as a high priority. This can only happen when the entire parish, particularly the adult members, embraces this work, offering their prayers, verbal support, and practical assistance. God may be prompting you to help in this way. Please speak with Michelle or call the parish office.
An Invitation and Reminder about our small Latin School: As my students and a few parishioners know, I host a small Latin School directed at teenagers and adult learners. Now in our third year, I intend to continue with beginners and intermediate students. Looking toward the fall, I would like to propose an informational meeting for anyone interested in beginning the glorious journey into the Latin language. We will meet in The Palmer Room (Coffee Hour room) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, at which time I will explain the general principles of the instruction and do a brief demonstration. I request that teenagers be accompanied by their parents or guardians at the informational meeting as adult encouragement is very important. Also, prospective students will be asked to commit to a three-month trial period, after which they may elect to continue or discontinue their studies. Several features of this instruction may be of special interest.
-
I teach combining both an active and "translation" method. Students will hear and understand a simple Latin text without the aid of a translation. We will, however, revert to English to make absolutely certain that students understand every detail, including all grammatical constructions.
- I work in concert with other Latinists. My secretary Joan, who knows Latin well, has been an invaluable assistant with my intermediate students. I am also connected to a wide network of teachers whom I may consult as needed.
I teach only willing and determined students. In this way we are never burdened by trying to force instruction on an unwilling and resistant student. For the good of all, every student is expected to do his or her very best and to participate fully in class exercises.
- As my classes are small, I am able to adapt to different learning styles. The classroom environment is supportive, light-hearted, and one in which a mistake is treated as just that, a mistake—although every small error is still an occasion to learn.
- This school is open to non-parishioners. Please share this with anyone who may be interested.
- Although students are asked to purchase classroom materials, the course is otherwise free.
- Latin is a great JOY.
